Introduction --------------- This document is meant to aid the end user in setting up and configuring Matilda's Counter Script for use on a website! Matilda's Counter Script is meant for use on any website and runs by calling the script with special options as an image, the script then reads the options and returns the appropriate image. 2. Configuration ---------------- NOTE: On some NT systems (and maybe others?) you will need to a) run this script from the "cgi-bin" directory and b) rename the main script to mcounter.pl for the web server to use perl to run the script, this is due to the way IIS is designed and not a script problem. To start, open up the "mcounter.cgi" script, you will be presented with lots of options that may be set to change how the main script reacts to different circumstances. The first option is; my $use_ssi = false; This option tells the script whether or not it is being called as a SSI (Server Side Include) within another page, if the script is being called via an image tag () then this should be set to false, and this is the default. The next option is whether or not to use graphics to display the current hit-count and looks like so; $gfx_mode = true; The other choice for this option is "false" and the hit count will be displayed as text instead. If you have chosen to display the hit count in text then you will want to edit the next option; my $text_format = "[>COUNT<]"; This variable holds details on how you want to show the hit count in text mode, "[>COUNT<]" will be replaced with the hit count in whatever this string is set to, HTML can be present in this also. The next few options are for those of you who are using graphics mode for displaying your hit count (most of you I would reckon), the first of which is the most important; my $gfx_pics = ''; Which tells the mcounter script where it can find all the graphics files either relative to the current directory or absolute to the server, ie '' would be relative to the current directory and _be_ the current directory, 'images/' would also be relative to the current directory but be in a sub-directory called 'images' while '/var/www/mcounter/images/' would be an absolute directory as it tells the script _exactly_ where to go for the images. The graphics should be in the following filename format; 0. 1. 2. etc etc These should go up to 9., for see "my $gfx_exts". The next option is whether or not graphics exist for "animated tickovers", this means are there any graphics that can be used for making numbers change (ie from 0 -> 1 there will be a rolling graphic of 0 through to 1); my $gfx_animated_tickover = true; If this is set to "true" then there needs to be extra graphics in the same directory as the other graphics named as so; 0_to. 1_to. 2_to. etc etc These should also go upto 9., as for , I was just getting onto that; my $gfx_exts = 'gif'; This tells the script the filename extension for each of the images, it is also used for setting the browser MIME type for the pictures. If this is set to 'gif' then the images should be named as such; 0.gif 1.gif 2.gif etc etc All the way upto 9.gif, obviously if this is set to 'jpg' then they would need to be called; 0.jpg 1.jpg 2.jpg etc etc If the script is in graphics mode and is being called as an SSI then the following two options can be used to specify the width and height of the image within the tag; my $gfx_width = 12; my $gfx_height = 18; If the images are of different sizes, or if you don't know there exact sizes then these can be set to 0 and the images will be auto-sized by the client's browser. The next option is _the_ most important of them all; my $cfd = 'mcounter.cnt'; This tells the script where to find the "count file" which holds the number of hits the the website has had and can either be relative or absolute. In this example, the option is relative to the current directory (as 'mcounter.cnt' has no directory information), but it could also be absolute, ie '/var/www/mcounter/mcounter.cnt'. The final option tells the script the maximum number (or the actual number in case of SSI cases) of digits to show for the counter, so if this is 6 then the maximum is 6 and for SSI cases this would show as 000006 but in other cases it depends entirely on how many times the script is called. The option is; my $dec_places = 6; This option does little to no harm and you should not be afraid to change it :) 3. Script setup --------------- The script should be uploaded onto your site in the same way as any normal perl script should, the same rules also apply for changing the scripts permissions etc. 4a. Web page setup when using SSI --------------------------------- If I recall correctly then the script should be called using the following HTML; Although I have never used any SSI so this may be incorrect! 4b. Web page setup when calling via Image tags ---------------------------------------------- This is the usual method that I use and an example is included in the "mcexample.htm" file, simply call the script using an image tag and pass the following options to it; gfx_dn -> tells the script which decimal place this image represents (0 = far right, n = far left) no_inc -> tells the script not to increment the count when displaying this image, after all, you don't want the script to increment the count _every_ time an image is called!
